The Tutu Foundation UK has added its voice to those welcoming the reopening of Southwark Cathedral (11 June, 2017), which was in the area cordoned off following the London Bridge terrorist attack a week ago.

The Cathedral has special significance to the London-based Charity, which works to prevent and resolve conflict by helping people build peaceful communities.

Trustee Ben Slee explains:

“The Tutu Foundation UK was founded in Southwark Cathedral by The Very Reverend Colin Slee, the late Dean of Southwark and Chair of the Borough Market, his wife Edith Slee, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his wife, Leah Tutu.

“We are tripling our efforts to bring communities in Southwark and across the UK together.”

The Tutu Foundation UK is currently leading a special initiative in Southwark and ten other London Boroughs titled the ‘‘UBUNTU – Youth Police Roundtable Project.’

Ben continues: “This is a unique piece of work focused on policing and community relations, knife and gun crime, and racial disproportionality in the Criminal Justice System.

“Along with the threat of youth radicalisation these issues have never been more important to Londoners.

“The UBUNTU – Youth Police Roundtable Project is enabling young people to meet with local police officers and staff to discuss the issues that are causing a genuine divide in community relations.

“We are delighted to be receiving the support of our Tutu Foundation UK Ambassadors, including Sir Hugh Orde OBE, former President of the Association of Chief Police Officers, and Janet Hills, President of The National Black Police Association.”
