A new ‘Pop Up Pavilion’ is being planned for public use in Westminster and Camden to benefit local communities, if £10,000 can be raised from sponsors to help build the ambitious structure.
The idea follows a recent competition for final-year BA Interior Design students at Regent’s University London, who were challenged to develop a reusable Pavilion to provide shelter and public space for activities such as debates, performances, films and social gatherings.
Regent’s students were given the brief of maximising innovation while sticking to a £10,000 budget and sixteen proposals were put forward. The judging panel was made up of representatives from the Howard DeWalden Estate, Deputy Editor of Dezeen, Architect Carl Turner, Regent’s Students’ Union, and Professor Aldwyn Cooper, Vice Chancellor of Regent’s University London.
The designs were reviewed for their aesthetics, ease of construction and transportation with student Cécile Norwood’s ‘The Sanctuary’ emerging as the winner of the Pop-Up Pavilion competition.
Cécile commented: “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to get this design hopefully built. I looked at what a University stands for and wanted to create a structure that is relaxed and free flowing, where people can come and feel a contrast to their busy lives, sit and interact with each other.”
Now moves are underway to turn the dream into reality and the University is busily seeking commercial sponsors for the project.
Mark Gower, Interior Design Programme Director at Regent’s University London added: “This project helped illustrate the genuine talent of our Interior Design students. The winning Pavilion design will provide a great escape for people and we look forward to working with sponsors who can help us develop and share this important space with local communities.”
