Latimer Arts College students Louis Wright and Charlie French, and a Year 10 group learning about Morrisons’ logistics work.

Latimer Arts College in Kettering recently joined forces with Morrisons to organise a special behind-the-scenes visit (4 June 2014) for 30 of its students to one of the supermarket’s foremost regional distribution centres.

The Morrisons ‘Latimer 953 grocery chamber’ employs around 650 people and is part of a vast distribution hub, based in Burton Latimer, which receives over a million cases of goods each week. The site serves around 90 Morrisons stores as part of a supply chain stretching across the East Midlands and reaching as far as London.

The Business Studies Year 10 group gained a first-hand view of logistics in action, with talks from Morrisons operations staff and a full tour of the site.

With Northamptonshire widely recognised as the leading centre for supply chain excellence in the UK, the trip offered an invaluable opportunity for the students to see how everyday grocery supplies are managed and delivered.

Latimer Arts College student Charlie French (15) commented:

“It was really interesting to see the fresh food delivery area where things like milk and cakes are stored.”

Louis Wright (15) said:

“We learnt about how, when stores order their stock, the information is passed direct to the forklift drivers, who pick out the food out and have it delivered the same day.”

Latimer Arts College Assistant Principal, Jyoti Pankhania, added:

“We think it is very important to enhance our business links and help students gain experiences outside of the classroom. We’re very grateful to Morrisons for welcoming our students and allowing them an insight into the world of logistics.”
